Stairlift Rental vs. Buying: Which Is Right for You?
Stairlift Rental vs. Buying: Which Is Right for You?
If you've decided a stairlift makes sense, the next question usually comes pretty quickly.
Should I rent or buy?
The honest answer: it depends on your situation. There's no universally right choice โ but there is a right choice for you. This guide will walk you through both options clearly so you can make a confident decision.
The Case for Renting
Renting makes the most sense when your need is temporary or uncertain.
Common Situations Where Renting Fits
- Recovering from hip replacement, knee surgery, or another procedure
- A loved one is staying with you temporarily after a hospitalization
- You want to try a stairlift before committing to a purchase
- You're not sure how long the need will last
What Rental Includes
When you rent a stairlift through Able Home, we own the equipment โ which means all maintenance and repairs for normal wear and tear are our responsibility, not yours.
If something isn't working right, you call us. We handle it.
You're also not left with equipment to dispose of when you no longer need it. We remove it professionally when your rental ends โ no damage to your home, no hassle.
Rental Terms
Our standard minimum rental period is 3 months. If your situation requires something shorter, give us a call โ we're happy to discuss options.
The Case for Buying
Buying makes more sense when the need is long-term or permanent.
Common Situations Where Buying Fits
- Managing a chronic or progressive condition (arthritis, Parkinson's, COPD)
- General aging โ the stairs have simply become a daily challenge
- You want to own the equipment outright for peace of mind
- Long-term cost savings matter to you
The Able Home Buy-Back Program
One of the biggest concerns people have about purchasing a stairlift is: what happens if I move, or I end up not needing it?
Here's how we handle that. If we installed your stairlift, we'll buy it back from you โ the value is calculated as a percentage of the original price, decreasing over time up to 8 years after installation.
That means buying a stairlift through Able Home doesn't have to feel like a permanent, irreversible decision.
What About Curved Staircases?
This is an important distinction: curved stairlifts are purchase-only.
Curved rails are custom-manufactured to fit your specific staircase exactly. Because they're built for one home, they can't be transferred and rented the way a straight lift can.
The Two-Straight Workaround
If your staircase has a turn or landing in the middle and you'd prefer to rent โ there's a solution worth knowing about.
It's possible to install two straight stairlifts meeting at the landing, one for each section of the stairs. You ride the first lift to the landing, step across, and ride the second lift the rest of the way up.
This approach works well for staircases with a single turn and is also a popular option for anyone looking for a more affordable alternative to a custom curved lift โ whether renting or buying.

How to Think About the Cost
We don't publish exact prices here because every home and situation is different โ but here's a useful frame.
Renting involves an installation and removal fee plus a monthly cost. Over a short recovery period, this is typically the more affordable path.
Buying costs more upfront but becomes more economical the longer the lift is in use. If you're looking at a multi-year need, ownership usually makes more financial sense.
Not sure which applies to your situation? That's exactly what our free in-home consultations are for. We'll give you real numbers for both options so you can compare them directly.
Still Not Sure?
That's completely normal โ and it's one of the reasons we offer free, no-pressure in-home consultations.
We'll look at your specific staircase, talk through your situation, and give you an honest recommendation. If renting makes more sense for you, we'll tell you that. If buying does, we'll explain why.
